Frequently asked questions

Getting started

How do I request a quote?

Send Saif a WhatsApp message or use the contact form with your site location and what you need the survey for. He will ask any follow-up questions, then confirm scope, deliverables, timeline and price in writing. Every quote is specific to the project.

What information should I prepare before contacting a surveyor?

The site location (an address or a map pin), the purpose of the survey, any title deed or existing survey plans, architectural or engineering drawings if the survey supports a design, and your preferred dates. If you do not have all of these, get in touch anyway and Saif will guide you.

How does an engagement begin?

With a discovery call on WhatsApp or by phone. Saif listens to what you need, may ask for documents or a site visit, and then sends a written scope and quote. Fieldwork is booked once you confirm.

Is the discovery call really free?

Yes. The initial conversation to understand your project carries no charge and no obligation. Fees apply only to survey work you decide to commission.

How is pricing determined?

By the size and complexity of the site, the type of survey, access and site conditions, the deliverables required and how quickly they are needed. No two sites are the same, so there is no fixed price list; scope and pricing are discussed and confirmed for each project.

Land surveying

When do I need a land survey?

Typically before buying or selling land, before designing or building, when dividing land into lots, when a boundary is unclear, and at the start of any infrastructure or development project.

What is the difference between a cadastral survey and a topographic survey?

A cadastral survey is concerned with legal boundaries: where a plot starts and ends. A topographic survey records the physical shape and features of the site: levels, contours, buildings, trees, roads and drains. Many projects need both, and they can often be carried out in a single visit.

Can you set out my building from the architect's drawings?

Yes. Setting out transfers the design positions onto the ground so that foundations, walls and services are built in the right place. Saif has set out buildings and individual lots on housing and smart-city developments.

Which areas of Mauritius do you cover?

Clients across Mauritius. Saif has surveyed sites island-wide, from Grand Gaube and Anse la Raie in the north to Nouvelle France in the south and the airport in the south-east, along the west coast at Albion and Bambous, and in the centre at Moka, Trianon and Bagatelle.

Coastal and bathymetric surveying

What is a bathymetric survey?

A survey of the bed beneath a body of water, measuring depths and mapping its shape. It is used for coastal design, port works, reservoir studies and drainage modelling, usually combined with a topographic survey of the land around it.

What are tide and current surveys?

Measurement of water levels over the tidal cycle and of the speed and direction of currents at the site. Coastal engineers and environmental consultants use the data for design and modelling.

Do you carry out coastal surveys for hotels?

Yes. Saif has delivered ongoing coastal survey programmes at hotel properties, combining beach topography, bathymetry and tide and current measurement so that changes can be tracked over time.

Drone surveying

What can a drone survey provide?

Orthophotos, surface models, contour plans and stockpile volumes over large or difficult areas, referenced to ground control points measured on site. Boundary work and precise setting out are still carried out with ground instruments.

Deliverables and working together

What formats do you deliver plans in?

Usually PDF and AutoCAD DWG, with Civil 3D and other formats by agreement. Digital data for modelling can be supplied in the format your consultant specifies.

Do you work with architects, engineers and notaries?

Yes. Much of Saif's work is delivered to consulting engineers, architects and developers, and cadastral work is often carried out alongside the client's notary.

Do you provide legal advice, approvals or permits?

No. Saif provides survey measurement, plans and survey documentation. Legal advice comes from your notary or lawyer, and approvals and permits are issued by the relevant authorities. Survey work supports those processes but does not replace them.

Which languages do you work in?

English and French, written and spoken.

These answers are general information about surveying practice and are not legal advice. Requirements for a specific transaction or project should be confirmed with your notary, engineer or the relevant authority.
